Online Courses for EMT B

Online courses for EMT B will prepare you to become a basic EMT (emergency medical technician). After completing the basic training, you can proceed and study for the EMT state license test. You can also proceed and study EMT Intermediate and go for the paramedic level.

Coursework Overview

EMT schools offer several modules which divided the subjects. These are usually preparatory courses, airway management, operations, children and infant emergency. Trauma and other medical emergencies are covered too. Other subjects to be discussed are patient assessment, medical/legal issues, sizing the scene and making an initial assessment.

Other subjects covered in these lessons are developing communication skills, critical thinking, legal and ethical issues. Studying an airway management module includes learning to use oxygen equipment and proper management techniques.

You also learn about taking a patient history, behavioral and obstetrical / gynecological emergencies and coping with chest and abdomen injuries. Other areas of study are about diabetes/altered mental status, ambulance operations and making detailed exams.

Additional Details

As an EMT Basic they will learn how to provide first aid to injuries to the head, spine, soft tissues, bleeding and shock. They will also learn how to provide emergency cardiac services, deliver respiratory care and poisoning/overdose. Students will also study how to work in an emergency room setting and interact with local emergency service providers.

Would-be EMTs are also taught to give assistance to emergency childbirth services. Their work includes stabilizing fractures and other injuries.

Requirements

Those who enroll in EMT B programs must have a 70% grade or higher to graduate. They must be at least 18 years of age and be free from any physical or mental defect or disease. They must not have any disability that will prevent them from performing their duties.

An aspiring EMT must be able to lift 125 pounds. Addiction to drugs and alcohol are not allowed. They must be able to read, write and speak in English. Tests and exams are conducted at the end of each module.

Other Information

These programs take anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks to complete. At the end of the course you will get a certificate. These are not usually transferrable to a degree. Make sure that the online training program is legitimate. It must have approval from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA).

Online courses for EMT B are available in some colleges and universities. However, you cannot complete the training over the Internet. Live classes are necessary to gain hands-on experience.
